How to clean soft furnishings is a question we get asked a lot at Edison & Day, especially when it comes to curtains and bedspreads in care environments. So we’ve put together this brief guide to help you keep them fresh, compliant, and looking their best for as long as possible.
What are Edison & Day care home soft furnishings made from?
Our curtains and bedspreads are made from 100% inherently flame-retardant fabrics. That means the flame-retardant performance is built into the fibre itself, rather than being a topical treatment that can wear off over time.
Because these items are in regular use, we recommend routine care and cleaning, and dealing with any spillages as soon as possible.
How to clean care home curtains
Unless otherwise specified for your order, our care home curtains can be cleaned safely using the guidance below.
✓ Machine wash at 40°C
✓ Use a short cycle (this is recommended for curtains)
✓ Cool iron only if ironing is required
✖ Do not bleach
✖ Tumble dry not recommended (use low temperature only if you have to)
Tip: After washing, hang curtains back up as soon as you can, while they are still slightly damp. It helps reduce creasing and can minimise the need for ironing.
How to clean care home bedspreads
Bedspreads take a lot of day-to-day wear, so keeping to the right wash settings really helps protect the fabric and finish.
✓ Machine wash at 40°C
✓ Thermal disinfection: 71°C can be used if required (for example, if your infection control process calls for it)
✓ Cool iron only if needed
✓ Suitable for professional dry cleaning
✖ Do not bleach
✖ Tumble dry not recommended (low temperature only if necessary)
Note: If you do use thermal disinfection, follow your internal laundry guidance on cycle time and load size so the process is effective and consistent.
What to avoid with care home soft furnishings
To help your curtains and bedspreads last longer, avoid the common causes of premature wear:
- Bleach and harsh chemicals
- High heat tumble drying (it can shrink or stress fibres)
- Over-washing at higher temperatures when it is not needed
