How Do I Measure for Care Home Curtains?

One of the biggest questions we get asked from our customers is how to measure for your curtains.

As every pair of curtains from Edison & Day® is made-to-measure, this means they are unfortunately non-returnable. Understandably, one of our customers' biggest fears is them measuring the curtains incorrectly and therefore having the curtains not fit!

That’s why we have put together a comprehensive guide on how to measure for curtains and blinds to make sure that we get it right the first time.

What do I need to provide to ensure my curtains will fit?

The overall width and the overall drop. That’s it, we work out the rest! Simple right?

How to measure the width

If there is a track or a curtain pole already in place where your new curtains are going to go, simply measure the width of this track and this is your overall width.

If however, there is no track or pole in place we recommend that you measure the width of the window opening and then add 300mm (150mm to each side of the window opening) onto the width of the window opening. (Window Opening + 300mm = Overall Width)

There is no need for you to add on extra width to allow for gather, we allow for gather in-house. If you add on extra width for gather you can run the risk of your curtains not stacking back neatly when the curtains are open.

How to measure the drop

Before you start to measure the drop, first you need to decide where you would like the curtains to finish, sill length, just below the sill or floor length.

We recommend the following:

  • Sill length curtains finish approx. 1cm above the sill
  • Curtains that fall below the sill level finish approx. 15cm below the sill, or 3cm above a radiator
  • Floor-length curtains typically finish approx. 1cm above the floor but if your floor is slightly uneven, we recommend that the curtains rest on the floor by approx. 1-2cm to help disguise this
  • Puddled curtains trail on the floor by approx. 10-15cm and help give a luxuriant feel to your room. Ideal for bedroom curtains or dress curtains that are non-closing.

Curtains on tracks: Measure the drop from the top of the track so that the curtain hides the track down to your desired length.

Eyelet curtains: Measure the drop from the top of the pole down to your desired length. Please note that we add 3cm allowance above the eyelets as standard.

Curtains on a pole: Measure the drop from the small metal ring (eye) at the bottom of each curtain ring (see diagram) down to your desired length. Measuring from the eye on the bottom of the ring will prevent the pole or the rings from being obscured by the curtain.
