What Are Fabric Bands?

Fabric bands are a way of grouping different fabrics based on their cost per metre. They help us provide accurate, consistent pricing for both upholstered furniture and soft furnishings, regardless of the specific fabric you choose.

This approach is widely used across the interiors and furniture industries. While each company may group fabrics differently, the principle is the same: the higher the band, the more premium the fabric.

How do fabric bands work?

Fabric bands are typically graded from Band A (lowest cost) up to higher letters like Band E or F. Some manufacturers use numbers instead (e.g. Band 1, Band 2), but the system works in the same way.

Each band represents a range of fabric costs. So when you're choosing a fabric for a chair or a set of curtains, we refer to its band to determine how it affects the total price of your order.

Fabric bands and upholstered furniture

For chairs, sofas, and other upholstered items, fabric bands help us quickly quote a price depending on your chosen material.

For example:

  • A Cosette sofa in a Band A fabric would sit at the lower end of the pricing scale.

  • The same sofa in a Band D fabric would be more expensive, even though the design and frame stay the same.

This gives you a quick way to compare different options and find a balance between look, performance, and budget.

Fabric bands and soft furnishings

Soft furnishings work slightly differently, as the total price depends on both the fabric band and the quantity of fabric required.

For example, with curtains:

  • Two different fabrics from Band A will cost the same if the curtain size, lining and heading type are all the same.

  • If one of the fabrics is from Band B, that option will be more expensive—even if everything else stays the same.

This same principle applies to bedding, scatter cushions and other made-to-order soft furnishings.

Why we still use fabric bands

Even though we’ve removed online checkout, fabric bands remain a vital part of our quoting process. They allow us to:

  • Group fabrics by price tier for faster quoting

  • Keep pricing consistent across product categories

  • Help you compare value between different fabrics
